If an iPhone 12 Bug Broke Your Wireless Charging, Try This...

No one is sure how many new iPhone 12 owners are affected, but it seems that there’s at least some kind of problem that prevents the new iPhones from recharging properly on a wireless charger.

The problem appears to affect those using Qi-based chargers, (the most common type) rather than Apple’s new MagSafe chargers. But I don't think there is evidence to rule it out either.

Symptoms:

When you place your iPhone 12 on a Qi charger, nothing happens. No charging , and no amount of messing with your iPhone positioning on the charger seems to help.

9to5Mac says, Apple is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. That’s great, because it doesn’t seem like there is a hardware problem that would require shipping your iPhone 12 to Apple (or worse, taking it into a retail store). The bad news is there is no published fix and no estimate for when the fix may arrive. In the meantime, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this yourself.

OK, what can I try?

First, don't freak out. Don't call Apple to replace your iPhone, which would require setting it all up again from scratch (or a backup). And don't reset your iPhone (via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings) in the hopes that will magically fix something. That's a big change and isn’t guaranteed to fix anything.

Make sure you’re running the newest iOS, currently 14.2, as it specifically fixes some issues from before, that prevented iPhone devices from charging wirelessly. If that doesn’t help you out, I have heard reports that people are finding success getting their iPhone 12s charging again by performing a Force Restart whenever the wireless-charging bug pops up:

1. Press the Volume Up button,
2. then press the Volume Down button,
3. then hold the Side button (the one you use to turn your iPhone 12's screen on and off).
4. Once you see the Apple logo appear, release the Side button and wait for your iPhone to restart.

You can also switch to a wired charger for now, (duh). That’s a little harder due to the iPhone 12s not coming with new power adapter—just the cable. But I am sure you have some kind of USB-C adapter (or computer) sitting around.

Good luck. And let us know what worked for you in the comments.

Here's a wireless charger with a little wooden style

So, you fixed it, and now wireless charging works great on your iPhone. Awesome, now you should upgrade to a better wireless charger.

The Force Restart instructions worked perfectly for my iPhone 11s. I would not have guessed that this was a software issue that just popped up. Thank you!

I have tried the advise above and nothing works, and that’s using a QI or the MagSafe charger. Come on Apple, hurry up with the fix, it’s so frustrating.
